A new research paper, led by Professor Emma Smith has recently been published. The study compares findings from two national surveys of education researchers - one from 2002 and another from 2022, that was led by colleagues in Education Studies. It examines how the types of research methods used have shifted over the past two decades and places these trends within broader debates about purpose, quality, and methodology in the field.

The study reveals that education researchers today report using fewer research methods than their counterparts twenty years ago. It also highlights an increasing divide between those who use numeric approaches and those who rely on non-numeric methods.

The Gatsby Foundation and the JP Morgan Chase Foundation are supporting the Institute for Employment Research at the 天美传媒 to undertake research to understand how parents and carers can be better supported by schools and colleges to feel more informed and confident with the advice they give to their children. Dr John Gough from our Careers team has been involved in the research project on 'The role of parents in providing careers guidance and how they can be better supported.'

Professor Sonia Bhalotra is one of three 天美传媒 academics to have been , in recognition of the originality and influence of their research in the humanities and social sciences.

The British Academy is the UK's national academy for the humanities and social sciences. Its Fellowship recognises scholars whose research has made a substantial contribution to their discipline and to wider society.

92 new fellows have been elected this year.

Announcing the news, Professor Susan J. Smith PBA, President of the British Academy, said: 鈥淚 am delighted to welcome our newest Fellows to the British Academy. Each has made an outstanding contribution to their field, and together they reflect the remarkable breadth and depth鈥痮f scholarship across our disciplines.

"Our new fellows join a community of scholars with unparalleled expertise, dedicated to advancing research, fostering collaboration鈥痑cross disciplines鈥痑nd demonstrating the鈥痸alue of the humanities and social sciences. I am proud to give my warmest congratulations to them all on their election today.鈥�

Professor Bhalotra said: "I am honoured to have been elected a Fellow of the British Academy. My research seeks to understand why some people do not fulfil their potential, with a particular focus on women and children. It investigates how markets, technology, social norms, law, and political and corporate leadership shape people鈥檚 opportunities. I hope this recognition highlights the importance of bringing rigorous empirical evidence to questions of profound social significance."

Congratulating Professor Bhalotra on her award, Head of Department Professor Jeremy Smith said: "Professor Sonia Bhalotra鈥檚 election to the British Academy is a tremendous achievement and reflects a career dedicated to excellence, innovation and impact. Sonia鈥檚 research has shaped understanding of some of the most important economic and social challenges facing societies today. Professor Bhalotra joins Warwick Economics colleagues Professor Peter Hammond, Professor Mark Harrison, and Professor Kenneth Wallis in the Academy.

Professor Kirsty Hooper, Professor of Hispanic Studies, and Professor Celia Lury, Professor in the Centre for Interdisciplinary Methodologies, have also been awarded Fellowships this year.
