What is interactive learning?
Interactive learning is an approach that actively involves students in the learning process through participation, collaboration, and reflection. Within a teaching context, this means designing activities that require students to engage with content rather than passively absorbing information. Learners are encouraged to interact with content by making decisions, solving problems, and interacting with peers, instructors, and digital tools.
This approach supports deeper understanding by prompting learners to apply knowledge, think critically, and receive timely feedback. It also increases motivation and engagement, helping to create a more personalised, meaningful, and active learning experience.
Why should I use interactive learning?
Making a course interactive involves designing learning experiences that actively engage students through purposeful activities, feedback, collaboration, and multimedia. The focus is on creating opportunities for learners to participate, apply knowledge, and reflect, rather than simply consume information.
This can include quizzes with feedback, discussions, simulations, interactive videos, and collaborative or peer-based activities. Effective interactive design also ensures that each activity aligns with learning outcomes and provides opportunities for feedback and progression.
Support diverse learning styles
Interactivity supports diverse learning needs by offering varied ways to engage with content. Activities such as discussions, visuals, and practical tasks help learners connect with material. Providing choice, feedback, and opportunities to contribute increases engagement, encouraging a stronger sense of ownership over learning.
From passive to active
Interactive tasks shift learning from passive to active - improving retention, engagement, and motivation. They encourage learners to apply knowledge and think critically, leading to deeper understanding. Interactivity also supports accessibility by offering multiple ways for learners to engage and build confidence with content.
Immediate feedback
Interactive methods can provide immediate feedback to students on knowledge and progress. Interactive activities help students check their understanding as they learn, rather than waiting until an assessment. They encourage active participation, and provide opportunities to engage with learning in ways that suit their needs and interests.
H5P Interactive Content
H5P is available directly in Moodle enabling you to build H5P content and activities alongside other teaching materials and resources in your Moodle space.
There are over forty activities to choose from, including quizzes, games, presentations and interactive videos, learn more about the interactive video content on the This video demonstrates how interactive content can be used to embed questions and resources, allowing learners to engage actively with elements such as multiple choice quizzes and summarising key information.
