A Career in Conferences: Julie Taylor Reflects
You've spent many years at Warwick Conferences. What first brought you here, and what made you stay?
Being honest, when I applied for the role, I had no idea what I was stepping into. I am from Coventry originally but had worked away in London for a number of years - so I could not believe the size of the University when I came for my interview. I knew there was something about the job that excited me and from that first day on 20 March 2000 - there literally has never been two days the same! The challenge of different events and the people have kept me here.
How has Warwick Conferences changed during your time here, and what changes are you most proud to have been part of?
Wow - so much change! The job I do now is so different from my original role, but that is the best bit. The job has evolved, giving me the ability to manage the best team. I think as a team we have created the best venue for our customers and the best place to work in Coventry!
When you think back on your career, are there any events, guests, or moments that particularly stand out in your memory?
There are many events - big and small that have been amazing - Visit of President Clinton, Commonwealth Games and a really diverse mix of conference events where the client entrusts our team to deliver their event. Being part of the University has also meant being part of events such as Graduation since the day I started. This has always been a really special time of the year for me and watching how it has changed over the years has been rewarding, whilst maintaining the celebration element for our students has always been my focus. I have been part of some fantastic University events over the years - 50th Celebration Event in Butterworth Hall, dinner to celebrate the opening of the NAIC Building and major academic conferences to name but a few. Such events are when our colleagues from all across the University join together and support each other to achieve fantastic results - so I wanted to say a big thank you to you all for your support over the years too.
What has been the most rewarding part of your role at Operations Manager?
For me it is seeing the growth and development of people in our team. Internal progression is so important to me and I have seen so many people progress through the structure to being the amazing managers they are today. You know who you are! Warwick Conferences is all about people.
What do you think makes Warwick Conferences special compared to other venues you've encountered?
Absolutely the people I have worked with. The opportunities I have been given and the ability to make events happen. Warwick will always be the most memorable place I have ever worked.
If you could give one piece of advice to someone just starting their career at Warwick Conferences, what would it be?
Enjoy every minute - soak up the knowledge from everyone around you and you will love it! The hospitality industry is the best there is (granted it is the only one I have ever worked in!) - it gives you the ability to make events happen for customers and feel proud when events are successful.
How would you like colleagues to remember you and the contribution you've made here?
I would like to think that I have always been there to help and advice when required, to ensure colleagues develop professionally and to ensure people enjoy what they do!
As you look ahead, what are you most excited about in this next chapter?
Time for me and my family. But also time for gardening, cooking, walking, friends, reading and lots more!
From all of us at Warwick Conferences, thank you, Julie. Your dedication, leadership and commitment to both our customers and colleagues have helped shape Warwick Conferences into what it is today. We wish you a happy and fulfilling retirement filled with family, friends, new adventures, and plenty of time to enjoy the things you love. You will be greatly missed.
