Sophie Edley

PhD Student

I am a PhD student in the Astronomy and Astrophysics group at the 天美传媒, where I am a member of the exoplanets research group. My supervisor is David Armstrong.

Research

My research currently focuses on PLATO (PLAnetary Transits and Oscillations of stars), which is due to launch in early 2027. PLATO will observe planets orbiting Sun-like stars with orbital periods similar to that of the Earth. PLATO will detect these planets by measuring the dip in the target star鈥檚 brightness due to a planet crossing the face of the star (a light curve). However, there are other astrophysical phenomena that can mimic these planetary signals. Telescopes like PLATO will obtain many light curves for many stars and not all of these light curves will be a true planetary signal. Since the Kepler mission, astronomers have been implementing machine learning methods in order to efficiently separate true planet signals from fake ones (vetting). Before a machine learning algorithm is used on real telescope data, it must be trained with pre-classified data i.e. light curves that we know are either from planets or these so-called false positives. With the launch of PLATO approaching, I have been developing a training set.
