Turnitin update: no changes for 2026/27 academic year

Following the , the University and the Students’ Union have been working together to consider the concerns raised. We want to reassure students and staff that there has been no change to the arrangements for the 2026/27 academic year.

In late June, Turnitin notified UK universities of proposed changes to its End-User Licence Agreement (EULA), which were due to take effect on 7 July. Warwick, alongside other universities and through UCISA (a UK‑based professional body representing IT practitioners across higher and further education), raised concerns about the proposals. Turnitin subsequently postponed the introduction of a new EULA until September 2027 and committed to redrafting it and working with UCISA and its members to address concerns and clarify key questions.

On 29 September, Turnitin provided a statement to UK universities addressing the concerns raised. It confirmed that: “no student or staff data has been used to develop any generative artificial intelligence (AI) models or large language models (LLM), and that we have no plans to use student essays in this way.

Warwick has not accepted any proposed changes to the agreement and has not yet received a revised version. When a revised proposal is available, the University will consider it carefully with the Students’ Union. Part of that review will be to ensure the protection of both the academic integrity and intellectual property of student and staff work and to explore with the SU and Departments the viability of Turnitin’s continued use.

We will keep students and staff updated as this work progresses.
