In this study, we use a large-scale field experiment (N = 430) to test the effects of a common intervention that we hypothesize can strengthen civic engagement: a “clean walk.” We measure norm enforcement by observing participants’ reactions to a staged littering incident. We compare behavior following an engaging activity—collecting litter in public spaces—with behavior following either a control condition or a less engaging awareness intervention. Finally, we examine the interventions’ effects on other indirect expressions of disapproval.

Draw Forum Fri, 04 Sep 2026 07:10:43 GMT DRaW 8ac672c4a00dae0f01a01a62dba75c3c 22/10 2:30pm-3:45pm: DR@W Forum: Georgios.Gerasimou (Glasgow) /research/spotlights/behaviour/draw/forum/?calendarItem=8ac672c4a055c68001a06155e2205cc1
When: 2:30pm - 3:45pm, Thu, 22 Oct '26

Where: WBS 1.003

TBC

Draw Forum Fri, 04 Sep 2026 08:53:02 GMT DRaW 8ac672c4a055c68001a06155e2205cc2 29/10 2:30pm-3:45pm: DR@W / EBER Seminar: Nicolas Ajzenman (McGill) /research/spotlights/behaviour/draw/forum/?calendarItem=8ac672c4a00dae0f01a01a5f79b35c1a
When: 2:30pm - 3:45pm, Thu, 29 Oct '26

Where: WBS 1.003

Details TBC

Draw Forum Fri, 04 Sep 2026 07:23:35 GMT DRaW 8ac672c4a00dae0f01a01a5f79b35c1b 05/11 2:30pm-3:45pm: DR@W / EBER Seminar: Stefano Fiorin (Bocconi) /research/spotlights/behaviour/draw/forum/?calendarItem=8ac672c5a012d4b101a01a607f894abd
When: 2:30pm - 3:45pm, Thu, 05 Nov '26

Where: WBS 1.003

Details TBC

Draw Forum Fri, 04 Sep 2026 07:23:54 GMT DRaW 8ac672c7a012d48601a01a6326dc5f27 12/11 2:30pm-3:45pm: DR@W Forum: Moritz Janas (Gothenburg) /research/spotlights/behaviour/draw/forum/?calendarItem=8ac672c6a055c67b01a06b4e11ed3379
When: 2:30pm - 3:45pm, Thu, 12 Nov '26

Where: WBS 1.003

People’s willingness to act often depends on how many others act, but the structure of such interdependence is hard to disentangle with observational data. We introduce an incentivized method to study interdependence, grounded in threshold models. We apply it to a stratified U.S. sample of 5,000+ Asian, Black, Hispanic, and White adults to examine support for affirmative action. We document substantial heterogeneity in thresholds consistent with preregistered hypotheses from a model. Following changes in federal support for affirmative action, thresholds shift even as perceived benefits and beliefs remain unchanged, indicating that thresholds provide insights not captured by standard behavioral measures.

Draw Forum Fri, 11 Sep 2026 07:55:54 GMT DRaW 8ac672c7a05aed5901a06b5015b52eae 04/02 2:30pm-3:45pm: DR@W Forum: Dorothea Kuebler (WZB Berlin) /research/spotlights/behaviour/draw/forum/?calendarItem=8ac672c5a012d4b101a01a624ebb4afd
When: 2:30pm - 3:45pm, Thu, 04 Feb '27

Where: TBC

Details TBC

Draw Forum Wed, 19 Aug 2026 14:19:07 GMT DRaW 8ac672c5a012d4b101a01a624ebb4afe 18/02 2:30pm-3:45pm: DR@W / EBER Seminar: Canishk Naik (IIES) /research/spotlights/behaviour/draw/forum/?calendarItem=8ac672c5a012d4b101a01a646e2c4b14
When: 2:30pm - 3:45pm, Thu, 18 Feb '27

Where: TBC

Details TBC

Draw Forum Wed, 19 Aug 2026 14:19:58 GMT DRaW 8ac672c5a012d4b101a01a64a5f44b17 11/03 2:30pm-3:45pm: DR@W / EBER Seminar: Katie Coffman (Harvard Business School) /research/spotlights/behaviour/draw/forum/?calendarItem=8ac672c5a012d4b101a01a65bc774b1a
When: 2:30pm - 3:45pm, Thu, 11 Mar '27

Where: TBC

Details TBC

Draw Forum Wed, 19 Aug 2026 14:34:55 GMT DRaW 8ac672c5a012d4b101a01a65bc784b1b 18/03 2:30pm-3:45pm: DR@W / EBER Seminar: Chiara Farronato (Harvard Business School) /research/spotlights/behaviour/draw/forum/?calendarItem=8ac672c5a012d4b101a01a664aaf4b1d
When: 2:30pm - 3:45pm, Thu, 18 Mar '27

Where: TBC

Details TBC

Draw Forum Wed, 19 Aug 2026 14:35:23 GMT DRaW 8ac672c4a00dae0f01a01a6689695c4e 29/04 2:30pm-3:45pm: DR@W / EBER Seminar: Florian Zimmermann (CEPR, Bonn) /research/spotlights/behaviour/draw/forum/?calendarItem=8ac672c7a012d48601a01a67fbe95f48
When: 2:30pm - 3:45pm, Thu, 29 Apr '27

Where: TBC

Details TBC

Draw Forum Wed, 19 Aug 2026 14:23:37 GMT DRaW 8ac672c7a012d48601a01a67fbe95f49
