Hats Off to Our New Doctors: Celebrating HetSys Cohort 3

We are delighted to celebrate the graduation of our Cohort 3 students and congratulate them on reaching this significant milestone.

Completing a PhD in a scientific discipline is an outstanding achievement, requiring years of dedication, resilience, innovation and intellectual curiosity. Throughout their time with HetSys, our students have made valuable contributions to research across disciplines, exemplifying the collaborative and interdisciplinary ethos of the programme.

We are incredibly proud of all they have accomplished and excited to see the diverse career paths they are now embarking upon. Their success reflects the talent, ambition and impact of the HetSys community.

As they begin the next stage of their careers, we look forward to staying connected and celebrating their future achievements as members of the HetSys alumni network.

Vincent Fletcher (Cohort 4) Nominated for Best Poster Award at MRS Spring Meeting 2026

Vincent Fletcher, a PhD student from Cohort 4 of the HetSys CDT, was recently nominated for the Best Poster Award at the Materials Research Society Spring Meeting 2026.

At the conference, Vincent presented his research on automatic database generation for training Machine Learning Interatomic Potentials (MLIPs), contributing to ongoing advances in computational materials science and machine learning-driven atomistic simulation.

Fraser Birks (Cohort 4 ) Awarded Silver Medal at STEM for BRITAIN Competition

Fraser Birks, a PhD student within the HetSys CDT, recently visited the UK Parliament to compete in the Physics category of the prestigious STEM for BRITAIN poster competition.

Fraser was awarded the silver medal for his research poster exploring how machine learning can be applied within atomistic simulations, recognising the quality and impact of his work within computational and data-driven scientific research.
