How do I use this calendar?

You can click on an event to display further information about it.

The toolbar above the calendar has buttons to view different events. Use the left and right arrow icons to view events in the past and future. The button inbetween returns you to today's view. The button to the right of this shows a mini-calendar to let you quickly jump to any date.

The dropdown box on the right allows you to see a different view of the calendar, such as an agenda or a termly view.

If this calendar has tags, you can use the labelled checkboxes at the top of the page to select just the tags you wish to view, and then click "Show selected". The calendar will be redisplayed with just the events related to these tags, making it easier to find what you're looking for.

CSWG Writing Session
S1.50

Do you have a bit of writing to work on but struggle to find the space and time to properly focus on it? Do you find it easier to focus when you're in a room with other people who are also working on their writing? Then join us for the CSWG writing sessions, a morning when staff and students get together in the same room to work on their writing independently, but in the company of others!

These sessions are open to both staff and students (UG, PGT and PGR). They will run during the Autumn Term, as follows:

  • Week 5: Friday 6 November, 9 am – 1 pm
  • Week 7: Friday 20 November, 9 am – 1 pm
  • Week 9: Friday 4 December, 9 am - 1 pm

Sessions will be held in S1.50, located in the Social Sciences Building. Advance registration is not required - just turn up!

Sessions will be based on the highly successful Sociological Review Writing Retreat model, in which sessions are facilitated and divided into a series of fixed, timed writing slots, with everyone working silently and independently, in the same room at the same time. Details on how the sessions will run are outlined below.

Plans for the Sessions
We will discuss our writing/research goals at the beginning and end of the session, and the facilitator will tell you when to start and when to stop writing. Writing blocks will typically last 30–45 minutes or up to 1 hour, with 10-minute breaks in between. The facilitator will use a timer, so you can focus entirely on your work without watching the clock.

We work to a policy of 'no surveillance', so you鈥檒l be responsible for setting your own writing goals and monitoring your progress. The use of phones and the internet during the writing sessions will be discouraged (unless needed).

How to prepare?
To make the most out of the writing time, we advise the following:

  • Decide on a writing project (a chapter of your thesis, a journal article or book chapter);
  • Undertake most of the reading needed for your piece of writing;
  • Decide on the draft structure of your paper/chapter, including notes, plans, outlines, data, etc.
  • Bring all you need to spend the time writing - laptop, charger, notes, readings.

If necessary, you may use the sessions for preparatory tasks such as reading articles, provided this does not disturb others who are writing.
