Dr. John Back
Senior Research Fellow with a range of research interests:
Flavour physics with the experiment
- Maintenance of the software package that is used to generate simulation samples of heavy flavour particle decays, such as B and D mesons, for understanding experimental data
- Analysis of Lambda_b to J/psi Lambda and Lambda_b to mu mu Lambda decays
- Dalitz plot analysis of charmless three-body decays; original co-author of the Dalitz plot fitting software
- RF and thermal modelling simulations for the Vertex Locator (VELO) upgrade efforts using CST and Comsol software
Neutrino and accelerator (targetry) physics
- DUNE/LBNF targetry: of the graphite target to optimise the muon neutrino flux within engineering design constraints, using GEANT4 and FLUKA software
- experiment at CERN: calibration and analysis of the LBNF replica graphite target data
- : supervisor of PhD student on physics studies for the muon collider target (tungsten powder jet option)
- DUNE Near Detector 3D reconstruction: maintenance of the Pandora software package
Previous research
- Front End Test Stand: test beam facility at to research the technologies for future high intensity proton accelerators; design, simulation and commissioning of the focusing system
- Targetry studies for the
- Hidden sector physics with : muon shield magnetic fields and targetry studies
- software package: C++ implementation of Local Principal Curves that can identify features in 3D images of points and curves
- software package: C++ framework for calculating cross-sections as well as production and decay yields for cosmogenic activation studies, e.g. backgrounds in dark matter experiments
- Charmless B decays and Dalitz plot analyses for the BaBar experiment.
