Interactive workshop: How can the body become a site of learning, reflection and knowledge

Suitable for educators, researchers, research support staff and postgraduate students across disciplines and career stages. No artistic experience is required.

In this interactive workshop, Professor Lynn Hendricks will talk about her use of embodied learning and body mapping with first year medical students. This work supports students to reflect on identity, positionality, emotion, lived experience and the ways in which personal and social histories shape encounters with health, illness and professional practice.

In the workshop, participants will experience selected creative and embodied activities and consider how these approaches can be adapted for research, medical education and staff development. The workshop will demonstrate how body mapping can surface knowledge that may be difficult to express through conventional discussion, while creating opportunities to examine power, vulnerability, emotional labour, ethical uncertainty and experiences of failure.

The session will also explore how arts based and embodied approaches can contribute to more reflexive, caring and equitable learning and research environments, including spaces that recognise researchers as human beings whose bodies, emotions and experiences are present within the research process.
