New Materials for Redox Flow Batteries for Renewable Energy Storage

The growing use of renewable energy requires efficient, reliable and cost-effective energy storage. Redox flow batteries offer a promising solution for large-scale, long-duration storage, helping to balance intermittent renewable energy supply. This project will explore new materials for redox flow batteries, investigating their properties and electrochemical performance to improve battery efficiency, stability and durability, supporting the transition to a sustainable energy future.

Project detail:
The transition to a low-carbon energy system requires reliable and cost-effective energy storage to address the intermittent nature of renewable energy sources such as wind and solar power. Redox flow batteries (RFBs) are promising technologies for large-scale, long-duration energy storage, offering flexible system design, scalable capacity and the potential for long service life.
This PhD project aims to explore and develop new materials for redox flow batteries, with the goal of improving their performance, efficiency, stability and cost-effectiveness. Depending on the research direction, the project may investigate electroactive materials, electrolytes, electrodes, membranes or other functional components. Research activities may include materials synthesis, characterisation and electrochemical testing.
The project offers opportunities for interdisciplinary research across materials science, chemistry and electrochemistry, contributing to the development of next-generation energy storage technologies for renewable energy integration.

Project Aims
鈥 Explore new materials for redox flow batteries.
鈥 Investigate their physical, chemical and electrochemical properties.
鈥 Understand how material properties affect battery performance, efficiency and durability.
鈥 Evaluate their potential to advance large-scale renewable energy storage.

Candidate Profile
Applicants should have a background in materials science, chemistry, chemical engineering or a related discipline. An interest in energy materials, electrochemistry or sustainable energy technologies is desirable. Experience in materials characterisation or electrochemical testing would be beneficial but is not essential.
