Metamaterials for thermal management applications
This PhD project will investigate metamaterials for thermal management applications. The research will explore innovative structural architectures and material systems for controlling heat transport and thermal distribution under varying thermal loads.
Primary supervisor: Jisun Im - Jisun.Im@warwick.ac.uk
Project detail:
Effective thermal management is critical to the performance, reliability and energy efficiency of modern technologies. Many energy, industrial and electronic systems generate substantial waste heat during operation, creating challenges for thermal regulation and utilisation. Therefore, there is growing interest in advanced materials that can control heat transfer and improve thermal performance under varying operating conditions.
This PhD project will investigate the design, fabrication and characterisation of advanced metamaterials for thermal management applications. The research will focus on the development of innovative structural architectures and material systems that enable enhanced control of heat transport and thermal distribution in environments subjected to varying thermal loads. Particular emphasis will be placed on understanding how architecture, geometry and material properties interact to influence thermal behaviour and overall performance.
The successful candidate will undertake multidisciplinary research involving metamaterial design, computational modelling, fabrication, thermal characterisation and performance evaluation. Opportunities may also exist to develop and investigate novel materials systems where appropriate. The project aims to establish fundamental design principles linking structure, material composition and thermal functionality to support the development of thermal management technologies for energy, industrial and engineering applications.
