Integrating Environmental Sustainability and Vibration Serviceability in Footbridge Design

Contemporary structures are often designed to minimise use of materials, which often results in excessive vibrations. The aim of this project is to develop methodology for achieving both vibration serviceable and sustainable design solutions

Primary supervisor: Stana Zivanovic: S.Zivanovic@warwick.ac.uk

Co-supervisor: Dr Bintian Lin

Project detail:
Design of footbridges increasingly gravitates towards minimum material use solutions. This is largely enabled by availability of lightweight high-strength constructions materials. As a result, contemporary structures are often slender, low-mass, low-damping and/or low-frequency structures that are prone to excessive vibration due to dynamic loading generated by humans. While vibration performance and environmental sustainability have been extensively researched, their combined consideration remains limited. This project aims to develop methodology for achieving both vibration serviceable and sustainable design solutions. This is likely to involve optimising the structure to achieve both design objectives from the outset (rather than considering them one after another, whereby vibration is usually considered at the end) and might include aspects such as improving the loading modelling and adding distributed damping.
