New materials for low-temperature electrolysers for green hydrogen production
Green hydrogen produced using renewable electricity is essential for a sustainable, low-carbon energy future. This project will explore new materials for low-temperature electrolysers, including ionic-conducting electrolytes, membranes and electrocatalysts, to improve hydrogen production efficiency, performance and durability. The research aims to advance cost-effective electrolyser technologies and support the transition to a sustainable hydrogen economy.

Project detail:
Green hydrogen produced using renewable electricity is a promising route towards reducing carbon emissions in industry, transport and energy systems. Low-temperature electrolysers offer an attractive approach to hydrogen production, with the potential for high efficiency and integration with renewable energy sources. However, further advances in materials are needed to improve electrolyser performance, durability and cost-effectiveness.
This PhD project aims to explore and develop new materials for low-temperature electrolysers to support efficient and sustainable green hydrogen production. Depending on the research direction, the project may investigate novel ionic-conducting electrolytes, membranes, electrocatalysts for hydrogen or oxygen evolution reactions, and other functional materials. Research activities may include materials synthesis, characterisation, electrochemical testing and investigation of structure–property relationships.
The project offers opportunities for interdisciplinary research across materials science, chemistry and electrochemistry, contributing to the development of next-generation electrolyser technologies for a sustainable hydrogen economy.
Project Aims
鈥 Explore and develop new materials for low-temperature electrolysers.
鈥 Investigate their physical, chemical and electrochemical properties.
鈥 Understand how material properties influence electrolyser efficiency, performance and durability.
鈥 Evaluate their potential to improve the cost-effectiveness and sustainability of green hydrogen production.
Candidate Profile
Applicants should have a background in materials science, chemistry, chemical engineering or a related discipline. An interest in energy materials, electrochemistry, hydrogen technologies or sustainable energy systems is desirable. Experience in materials synthesis, characterisation or electrochemical testing would be beneficial but is not essential.
