New materials for low-temperature fuel cells for transport applications

Low-temperature fuel cells operating below 200掳C offer promising solutions for cleaner transport using fuels such as hydrogen, ammonia and methanol. This project will explore new materials, including ionic-conducting electrolytes, membranes and electrocatalysts, to improve fuel cell performance, efficiency and durability, supporting the development of next-generation fuel cell technologies for sustainable transport.

Project detail:
The development of efficient and sustainable transport technologies is essential for reducing carbon emissions and supporting the transition towards a low-carbon future. Low-temperature fuel cells, operating below 200掳C, offer promising solutions for transport applications due to their potential for high energy efficiency, low emissions and flexible fuel options, including hydrogen, ammonia and methanol. However, further advances in materials are needed to improve fuel cell performance, durability, fuel utilisation and cost-effectiveness.

This PhD project aims to explore and develop new materials for low-temperature fuel cells, focusing on improving their electrochemical performance and suitability for transport applications. Depending on the research direction, the project may investigate novel ionic-conducting electrolytes, membranes, electrocatalysts for anode reactions or other functional materials. Research activities may include materials synthesis, characterisation, electrochemical testing and investigation of structure–property relationships.
The project offers opportunities for interdisciplinary research across materials science, chemistry and electrochemistry, contributing to the development of next-generation fuel cell technologies for cleaner and more sustainable transport.

Project Aims
鈥 Explore and develop new materials for low-temperature fuel cells operating below 200掳C.
鈥 Investigate their physical, chemical and electrochemical properties.
鈥 Understand how material properties influence fuel cell performance, efficiency and durability.
鈥 Evaluate their potential for hydrogen-, ammonia- or methanol-fuelled transport applications.

Candidate Profile
Applicants should have a background in materials science, chemistry, chemical engineering or a related discipline. An interest in energy materials, electrochemistry, fuel cells or sustainable transport technologies is desirable. Experience in materials synthesis, characterisation or electrochemical testing would be beneficial but is not essential.
