ICON: Intelligent semantic Communication for future Optical Networks

ICON moves beyond accurate bit transmission towards the semantic and effectiveness levels described by Shannon and Weaver. It will use AI to identify and transmit the meaning that matters, reducing unnecessary data while improving the efficiency and reliability of optical networks. The PhD student will also participate in the EU Horizon Europe SMART project and collaborate with international academic and industrial partners.

Primary supervisor: Tianhua Xu - Tianhua.Xu@warwick.ac.uk

Project detail:
Traditional communication systems aim to transmit every bit as accurately as possible. However, people are often more interested in the meaning of a message than in receiving an exact copy of all the original data. For example, an image transmission system may only need to preserve the objects, features, or information required for a particular task, rather than every pixel. Inspired by the semantic and effectiveness levels of the Shannon-Weaver communication framework, the ICON project will explore how intelligent optical networks can understand, prioritise, and transmit the most useful information. The research will combine artificial intelligence, semantic encoding, optical communication, and signal processing to reduce unnecessary data transmission while maintaining the meaning and quality required by users and applications. The project will develop and experimentally evaluate new methods for optical fibre and free-space optical links, with the aim of improving bandwidth utilisation, reliability, latency, and energy efficiency. The successful candidate will also have the opportunity to participate in the EU Horizon Europe project SMART and collaborate with its international academic and industrial partners.
