The project list below helps self-funded and externally sponsored applicants (scholarship) connect with a prospective supervisor.
Applications are welcome from those who can support themselves or have funding already arranged. Such applications will go through the same level of academic assessment. Please see the fee arrangementsLink opens in a new window for PGR students.
MEDIA: Machine leEarning enhanceD optical Integrated sensing and communicAtion
MEDIA enables a single optical system to transmit data while simultaneously sensing objects, motion, position, and environmental changes. This PhD project will combine optical technologies, signal processing, and AI to develop shared waveforms and intelligent algorithms for reliable communication and accurate sensing. Applications may include smart energy systems, industrial automation, and environmental monitoring.
Primary supervisor: Tianhua Xu - Tianhua.Xu@warwick.ac.uk
Project detail:
The MEDIA PhD project will investigate optical integrated sensing and communication systems that use shared optical signals and transmission resources to communicate data while simultaneously sensing objects, motion, position, physical conditions, and environmental changes. The research will combine optical technologies, advanced signal processing, artificial intelligence, and intelligent resource allocation to develop shared waveforms and adaptive algorithms for reliable communication and accurate sensing. Particular attention will be given to the fundamental relationships and trade-offs between data rate, transmission reliability, sensing accuracy, spatial resolution, latency, computational complexity, bandwidth utilisation, and energy efficiency. The project will also explore channel estimation, target and event detection, parameter estimation, multimodal data fusion, and joint communication-sensing optimisation under changing transmission and environmental conditions. Potential civilian applications include smart energy systems, industrial automation, infrastructure monitoring, intelligent transport and environmental monitoring. The successful candidate will also have the opportunity to participate in the EU Horizon Europe project SPAR and collaborate with its international academic and industrial partners.
