Research Interests

Emma Bleach is a farm animal scientist whose research focuses on understanding the factors that influence the productivity, resilience and sustainability of dairy cattle. Having been immersed in the dairy industry throughout her career, she combines a strong understanding of commercial dairy systems with a research interest in the biological and management factors that influence animal performance. She completed a PhD investigating associations between ovarian follicle development and fertility in dairy cows, developing expertise in reproductive physiology, endocrinology and the ultrasonography to assess ovarian function. Her research spans the life course of the dairy animal, from calf and heifer development through to performance within the adult dairy herd, encompassing calf resilience, reproductive performance, lameness, and the impact of management and housing systems on animal health and productivity. Her work combines physiological, behavioural and production-based approaches, including ultrasonography, immunoassay methodologies, precision livestock farming technologies and production data analysis, to address challenges facing commercial dairy systems.

Scientific Inspiration

My PhD supervisor is my greatest research inspiration. He instilled in me a curiosity about how biological systems work and the importance of asking questions and never accepting observations at face value. The inquisitive approach he fostered continues to shape my research today.
