Scientific Background

Research Interests

I'm a neuroscientist working primarily with magnetoencephalography (MEG), to explore the human brain in health and disease. I'm interested in the application of technology for non-invasive measurement of biological processes, and how this can be applied to the understanding of things like neurodevelopment. As the Scientific Lead for MEG at Aston University, I have been most recently implementing a new facility for Helium OPM-MEG.

I'm inspired by many others, but often find most inspiration from those in other disciplines who can challenge my thinking in unexpected ways.

Provision of Training

Working with me will often rely on some upfront hands-on specialist training, that is not widely available elsewhere. So we will rely on a fair amount of in-house training, by myself and the lab team, and the early stages of a PhD will involve a lot of this. In the later stages I'll expect you to independently identify and follow up on the training that your research requires.

Progression Monitoring and Management

I like students to develop a growing sense of independence, and although we will meet regularly I'll expect you to keep me informed of your progress, and let me know of any barriers as they occur, rather than me looking over your shoulder. As you progress I hope you will develop some problem-solving strategies, because this is an integral part of research.

Communication

I hope that students will keep in touch with me, I'm happy to receive emails at any time and hope to see you regularly in the lab. I will not ask you to do anything, including answering emails, outside of working hours.

Meetings

PhD Students can expect scheduled meetings with me at least once per fortnight. These meetings will be a mixture of face-to-face and via video chat or telephone. I am usually contactable for an instant response 3 or 4 days per week.

Work Patterns

Certain tasks in my lab need to occur at set times, and students need to be able to commit to a rota/timetable shared with other members of the team.

I need at least 1 week's notice to provide feedback on written work of up to 5,000 words.
