More Than High-Performance Rigs: How Student Communities Bring Our Esports Fusion Lab to Life

When prospective students walk past our facility on campus tour days, the high-spec stations, tournament displays, and vibrant branding naturally catch their eye. But for us at the Esports Centre, the cutting-edge hardware is only ever the foundation. The real pulse of our venue comes from the student communities who gather here, collaborate, and transform digital spaces into lasting friendships.

Recently, we sat down with two student leaders who represent the heart of that mission: Maya, a third-year Classics student and Vice President of Warwick Esports, and Sophia, a third-year Psychology student serving as Community Manager and Artemis Events Administrator.

Maya still recalls the offer-holder visit that first brought her to our doors. Noticing our society branding on the building exterior—featuring a clever nod to the champion Warwick from League of Legends—she knew right away she had found her circle. "I was like, 'Oh my god, I have to join this society,'" Maya reflected. "As soon as I got here in Welcome Week, I was attending all the events and getting as involved as possible."

That initial curiosity soon paved the way for authentic peer connections. Long before they met offline, Sophia and Maya shared the virtual rift together in a five-stack League of Legends team. However, their real connection sparked right outside our gaming stations, during a community pub dinner at Fusion Bar.

"We met a lot of friends there, and that was also the night Maya and I met in person," Sophia told us. "I got to see Maya’s face and actually know who she was."

Stories like Maya and Sophia’s reinforce why our centre exists. Whether providing the arena for a tense five-stack tournament run or offering a relaxed table where students can chat between lectures, our space is designed to empower student communities to thrive—both on and off the screen.
